Cost of Gain Calculator
Enter the group's numbers and get cost of gain, ADG, and total cost in under two minutes.
Cost of gain is the dollars you spend to put one pound of weight on a single head. Use this calculator when you're partway through a feeding period and want to see where you stand — feed cost per day, days on feed, yardage, vet, and death loss roll up into a single $/lb of gain number, plus average daily gain (ADG) and total cost. Inputs are in U.S. units (lb/hd, $/hd/day) and assume one homogeneous group.
Frequently asked
What inputs do I need?
Number of head, purchase weight, current weight, days on feed, daily feed cost per head, yardage, vet/treatment per head, and death loss percentage. Most of those come straight off your delivery slips and a recent weigh.
How is cost of gain calculated?
Total cost (feed + yardage × days + vet + spread death-loss) divided by total pounds gained across all live head. The result is dollars per pound of gain, plus a per-head-per-day breakdown.
Does this include yardage and death loss?
Yes. Yardage is added per head per day across all days on feed. Death loss is applied as a percentage so each surviving animal carries the cost of the ones that didn’t make it.
Can I save my numbers?
Not on this free version. Submit your email to get a branded PDF report you can print or file. The full Cattle Revolution app saves every group and updates cost of gain automatically as you log deliveries.
